Who are we...

We are a group of passionate community volunteers dedicated to biodiversity advocacy and committed to making a positive impact in our town. Our mission is to protect, enhance, and care for nature conservation in Pwllheli.

The story so far…

In the heart of Pen Llŷn, the coastal town of Pwllheli is blessed with abundant natural beauty and diverse habitats: from the sea, beaches, dunes, woodland, rivers, wetland, and meadow - all providing a haven for numerous plant and animal species. One of the only towns in the UK to have a nature reserve within its boundaries, nature conservation in Pwllheli is a defining feature of the community. The reserve serves as an important breeding ground for migratory birds and a habitat for rare and endangered species. Over the years, various conservation efforts and management plans have been implemented to ensure the long-term sustainability of its ecosystems. Community volunteers, along with local groups and conservation organisations, have played a crucial role in biodiversity advocacy, maintaining and enhancing the reserve's natural assets.

Today, the nature reserve in Pwllheli stands as a testament to the commitment of the local community in preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of the area. It serves as an educational resource, a recreational space, and a vital part of the town's identity. Visitors can explore its trails, observe the diverse wildlife, and appreciate the wonders of nature in this remarkable sanctuary that is also a focal point for biodiversity advocacy.

In 2023, Ffrindiau Pwllheli was formed by a dedicated group of community volunteers who came together through the local GwyrddNi community climate assemblies. Driven by our shared passion for nature conservation in Pwllheli and inspired by past efforts, our main focus is on improving and developing nature in our town for future generations.

Through collaboration with the community and local partners, we strive to enhance the quality and accessibility of nature in Pwllheli. Our mission is to champion biodiversity and climate resilience, ensuring a secure and prosperous future for the town's nature, wildlife, and environment.

What next…

We have received funding to create a plan for nature conservation in Pwllheli. This initiative will be shaped by the views of local people and partners, serving as the foundation for future actions to enhance and protect biodiversity in our town.

We are organizing community events and volunteer opportunities that promote nature and engage community volunteers to support these efforts.

We are building our relationships and networks, seeking opportunities to work together on biodiversity advocacy, and making a difference in our town.

Additionally, we are exploring opportunities to fund local actions and activities that align with our key priority areas.
